Pura's Recycling Efforts Divert 200,000 Diapers From Landfills

Ecofriendly disposable diaper brand Pura has announced it has recycled 200,000 diapers at a Bristol, U.K. diaper recycling center, thanks to its partnership with recycling company NappiCycle since 2020 to reduce diaper waste in landfills.

In their first recycling trial in 2022, Pura and NappiCycle announced they had diverted 31,500 diapers from landfills; that same year, their U.K. retail partner Asda repurposed diaper waste into in-store signage for 320 stores, with other potential uses including road surface applications.

Pura and NappiCycle have established a bi-weekly collection schedule for used diapers from U.K. daycares and households, transporting them to the Bristol recycling site. Founded in 2020 by U.K. parents Guy and Abi Fennell, Pura has become a leading choice for parents in both the U.S. (following a successful 2023 Walmart launch) and the U.K. seeking convenient disposable baby care options that are also environmentally conscious. Their successful partnership, initially established to combat diaper waste, was recently extended for another five years.

India should invest in and promoting innovative diaper recycling technologies because India generates a massive amount of diaper waste daily due to its large population and the widespread use of disposable diapers.India's waste management systems are often overwhelmed, and there's a lack of specific facilities and processes for handling diaper waste separately.Used diapers pose hygiene risks due to the presence of bodily fluids and potential pathogens.Indian researchers and institutions are collaborating with international organizations and companies to learn from best practices and adapt technologies to the Indian.
