Europe’s Textile Sector Alarms as Ultra-Fast Fashion Firms Partner With Postal Operators
Share Post

Postal operators in France, Poland and Italy have struck deals with ultra-low-cost Chinese platforms such as Temu, sparking concern across Europe’s textile and clothing industry.  These agreements, between players like La Poste, Poczta Polska and Poste Italiane, speed up the inflow of parcels from non-EU sellers, potentially bypassing regulations meant to protect local industry.

According to Euratex, the first half of 2025 witnessed a 5% drop in clothing production and a 1.9% decline in textile output.  Employment in the sector also slipped, by around 3% in clothing and 4–5% in textiles.  Meanwhile, imports surged: clothing imports rose 12.3% and textile imports 7.7%.

Euratex argues these postal-operator agreements run contrary to the policy direction set by the European Parliament and widen loopholes that undermine both regulation and fair competition.  The body warns that if European governments and institutions don’t act by abolishing customs exemptions for parcels under €150, enforcing customs, VAT, and safety rules on all imports, and swiftly applying the Digital Services Act, Europe’s textile standards and its industrial ecosystem could collapse.

With nearly 100,000 textile jobs lost recently, the labor impact is severe. Industry groups have previously (in September 2025) signed a joint declaration, along with some 20 federations, demanding urgent political intervention to stem the tide of ultra-fast fashion.  The growing influx of cheap, non-compliant imports threatens local manufacturers, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and the environment due to overproduction and waste.
