A major national conference of Textiles Ministers is scheduled to take place in Guwahati on January 8 and 9, 2026, where Union and State government representatives, senior officials and key sector stakeholders will formulate a comprehensive roadmap aimed at accelerating the growth of India’s textiles industry.
Organised jointly by the Ministry of Textiles and the Government of Assam, this two-day National Textiles Ministers’ Conference will focus on aligning policies, programmes and strategic initiatives to strengthen India’s position as a global textiles manufacturing hub. The deliberations support the national vision of building a USD 350 billion textile industry and achieving USD 100 billion in textile exports by 2030.
The conference’s opening session on January 8 will be graced by:
Union Minister of Textiles, Giriraj Singh
Assam Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma
Minister of State for Textiles, Pabitra Margherita
Other dignitaries and senior officials from the Centre and States
Key policymakers are expected to set the tone for the discussions, emphasizing coordinated efforts between the Union and State governments to boost sector growth and global competitiveness.
Throughout the two days, sessions will explore critical themes to fortify the textile value chain, including:
Infrastructure and Investment: Building robust manufacturing and logistics infrastructure to attract domestic and foreign investment.
Export Expansion and Competitiveness: Strategies to diversify export markets and enhance competitiveness against global players.
Raw Materials and Fibres: Securing sustainable supplies and promoting value addition in natural and Man-made fibres.
Emerging Frontiers: Adoption of technical textiles, innovation, research & development.
Traditional Textiles, Handloom & Handicrafts: Revitalising heritage crafts, linking them with contemporary markets and scaling their commercial reach.
A highlight of the conference is a special conclave on January 8 focused on strengthening the textiles sector of the North-Eastern Region. This session will spotlight:
Silk, handloom and bamboo-based textile segments
Women-led enterprises
Efforts to brand “Textiles from North-East” to improve market access and integrate regional craft communities with national and global value chains
The conclave aims to unlock the unique textile strengths of the North-East and ensure these traditional sectors gain visibility and opportunities alongside mainstream industry growth.
Alongside formal deliberations, a special exhibition of Indian handlooms and handicrafts from across the country will be organised by the offices of the Development Commissioners for Handlooms and Handicrafts, giving artisans a platform to showcase their work and engage with buyers and policymakers.
