Union Minister Nitin Gadkari has called for a balanced and region-inclusive growth strategy for Maharashtra’s Vidarbha region, asserting that development should not be focused solely on Nagpur but extend across all districts to unlock the area’s full economic potential. Gadkari delivered this message at the official release of the “Advantage Vidarbha – 2025” report, underscoring the need for district-wise planning, modernisation, and inclusive policies at the grassroots level.
Addressing representatives from industry, government and civil society at an event organised by the Association for Industrial Development (AID), the Union minister stressed that Vidarbha’s growth strategy must leverage the distinct strengths of each district. Instead of placing the spotlight only on Nagpur, Gadkari emphasised opportunities in districts such as Amravati, known for textile production, and Dhapewada, where traditional silk and handloom sectors remain vital. His comments reflect a broader vision for a diversified economic ecosystem that supports varied industries and local talent.
Gadkari pointed to the launch of a non-profit textile firm in Dhapewada as an example of inclusive development in action. The initiative, which currently employs more than 1,500 women, demonstrates how rural employment can expand through thoughtful industry integration. He also outlined plans to introduce modern textile technologies, such as electric looms, to boost productivity and connect rural artisans with larger markets.
The minister highlighted the importance of incorporating agriculture, handicrafts and services into Vidarbha’s development framework. Drawing on his own farming experience, Gadkari shared insights on organic cultivation — including residue-free tur and onion farming — as a means to elevate farmers’ incomes and reduce distress in rural communities. “Innovative, small-scale farming methods can uplift people from extreme poverty and provide alternatives that curtail farm suicides,” he remarked, pointing to agriculture as a foundation for economic stability.
Beyond agriculture and textiles, Gadkari also emphasised infrastructure and industrial expansion. He mentioned ongoing discussions with major investors, including Jindal, around establishing steel facilities in the region. To support these ventures, he detailed plans for supplementary infrastructure, such as modern hotels and conference centres near agro-convention facilities — including a proposed 350-room five-star hotel that aims to enhance business tourism and local employment.
During the event, Gadkari also unveiled the “Startup Connect – 2025” booklet, advocating for the role of startups in transforming Vidarbha’s economy. He encouraged local entrepreneurs to innovate and capture new opportunities, stressing that startups can serve as catalysts for sustainable regional growth.
The programme drew participation from a diverse group of dignitaries, including SBI Deputy General Manager Rajesh Saurabh, IIM Director Bhimraya Metri, and leaders from the MSME department and AID leadership — all echoing the urgency for an equitable development model that benefits every part of Vidarbha.
Gadkari’s remarks come amid ongoing dialogues about regional prosperity and infrastructure enhancement across Vidarbha — aims that align with broader economic trends and state-level initiatives to strengthen industry, connectivity and rural livelihoods throughout central and eastern Maharashtra.
